It Hurts To Be Brave

When that day came, she said good-bye,

All I wanted to do was cry

For missing the love that she gave,

But I knew that I must be brave.

Two small children she left behind

Looking for reasons they can’t find

Why this kind of thing has to be,

While I cry tears that they can’t see.

She said, “be brave, and please don’t cry.

Perhaps, in time, your love will die”.

I can’t forget the love she gave,

And, God, how it hurts to be brave.

She’s gone because she saved a child

From a car that was running wild.

Too late to jump or get away,

She pushed the child from danger’s way.

As she lay there, about to die

She made me promise not to cry

Because my love would now be gone,

And I would have to carry on.

She said, “My Darling, don’t be blue.

My love will always be with you.”

Now I’m standing beside her grave,

And it hurts like Hell to be brave.

She said, “be brave, and please don’t cry.

Perhaps, in time, your love will die”.

I can’t forget the love she gave,

And, God, how it hurts to be brave.
