I got a letter, just today,

From a lady, so far away.

It's not a letter trimmed in black,

No angry words that she'll take back.

I love the lady, Heaven knows,

Who says her heart is like a rose.

It seems this one I love so much

May want to stay just out of touch.

I never want to see love die,

And, Lord, I'd hate to say, "good-bye".

My tears would be my sign of pain

Shed for a rose that needs the rain.

I read her warning of the cost...

Her love would be forever lost.

A love with passion, a love that's true,

These are the things I offer you.

I must be stupid, I suppose,

Not knowing how to love this rose.

A man has feelings, just like you.

A man needs love, and one that's true.

He needs the touch that's soft and light,

A gentle whisper in the night

That says she loves with all her might,

And makes him feel that he's all right.

Like a rose? I beg your pardon.

A woman's heart is a garden.

What is planted will grow in there,

Fear and doubts, or true love and care.

Roses can grow, but weeds can, too.

You're the planter. It's up to you.

It sounds as if I've done her wrong,

And reads just like a country song

A country song full of woe

Of once true love, about to go.

I got a letter, just today,

And I don't know what I should say.
